Location for Art Show

聖誕節前我上Yelp, 以Art Gallery做為關鍵字, 查詢南灣可做攝影展的地點, 按地址列了一張表, 花了幾天一一去探查, 所獲不多, 但是想把心得寫出來給大家參考. 如果各位有其他可考慮的地點, 還請通知我.

Sunnyvale Art Gallery and Café  408-737-8188

251 W El Camino Real, Sunnyvale

M-F 7-8/Sat 9-9/Sun 11-6

老闆Sue (or Kimm)是韓國人, 咖啡店由她兒子Tim看管, 隔壁的Kimm's Flower Basket也是她的店.  Sue本身是水彩畫家, 所以很多展出都和Painting有關. 咖啡店的前左半邊是咖啡店, 中左半邊販賣水墨畫相關材料, 前右半邊是交誼廳 (有沙發桌子), 中後方則是展覽區, 有一大二小的空間, 共三區的場地可供展覽.  基本上我對這個場地還算喜歡, 因為是白牆, 有頭照燈, 有地方可擺桌供小點當作Open Night's Reception, 多人同時參觀也不嫌擁擠, 雖然地點不算好, 停車不甚方便, 但可以接受. 唯一的問題是老闆Sue並不認為攝影是藝術的一種 (Photography is not art), 她的態度不算友善, 所以我覺得她不想租給我 (但是她又一直說藝廊不賺錢, 那我要花錢租她又不要). 這家咖啡店位在De Anza College對面, 近Highway 85 的那個Plaza. 店內很暗, 沒有探照燈打在畫上, 多半是學生, 播放的音樂很另類, 我的感覺不是很好, 走進去五秒鐘左右看一下就出來了.  只能說這地點不適合我.

M-F 7-9/Sat-Sun 8-9

這家店在Bed Bath and Beyond那個Plaza裡, 停車位很多. 店內寬敞明亮, 感覺上坐在裡面消費的人大約三十歲上下. 掛畫的牆壁範圍蠻大, 深色背景, 與負責安排藝術家和音樂家時間的Kate聊了一下, 店裡的規矩是, 每月第一天掛上畫, 最後一天取下畫, 店裡抽一成所有當月賣的畫, 當月第一個週六是Open Reception, 靠近天花板的地方有釘一排的釘子, 要自備魚線或鐵絲, 上頭掛在釘子上, 下頭掛在畫上, 通常每個月會排二個藝術家的作品, 分前店/後店的牆壁空間展出. 這個店內氣氛不錯, 將作為考慮. (感謝Jennie留言推薦)

這家店很小, 而且地點很偏僻(Miller 的另一邊是住宅區, 雖然Plaza內有個Safeway). 題外話: 隔壁有個同同手工水餃店, 不知道有沒有人去試過?

19 N Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos

M-Th 6-9/F 6-10/Sat 7-10/Sun 7-8

這家咖啡店地點很好, 就在Los Gatos市區, 往來行人很多, 內部也別有特色, 右邊整面牆都是紅磚, 也是掛畫的地方.  必須向店家要申請表, 連同作品 (slides or Photos or website) 送進審核, 需時數月, 而且僅能使用紅磚上已有的釘子位置掛畫.

Big Basin Café, 14471 Big Basin Way #A, Saratoga

408-741-1185  M-F 6-6/Sat-Sun 7-6:30

這家店很小, 只有二個角落的四面小牆可掛畫, 不過內部氣氛還算好, 聽說Pastry很不錯.

以下5家皆處於Downtown San Jose的 SOFA District, 每個月的第一個週五有Art Walk.

內部氣氛不錯, 店員態度好, 僅有二樓 (樓中樓) 的空間掛畫, 空間不多. 目前的展出已經排到2011年, 所有展覽由Anno Domini's Cherri經手處理.

有3 gallery, 2 conference room, 不過只有conference room出租. 場地很專業.

位在SJSU 4th St Garage的一樓, 各式各樣的藝品展出,

所有展出採會員制 (會費是$100 for 3-month), 經過審核後才能成為會員, 會員會得到4x8大小的木板, 免租金, 但所賣出的作品要抽20% commission. (Photo by Michael H. from Yelp)

1171 Homestead Rd #190, Santa Clara (on Jackson Side)

地點尚可, 近Santa Clara University, 旁邊有Parking Garage, 所以停車很方便. 店內空間不小, 大部份的牆壁是Show Display Panels款式 (跟郵局內部的牆很像), 只要有鐵勾環就可以掛畫了.  可惜的是, 店家只展示顧定幾位Artists的作品, 而不是每個月做替換.

鐵皮屋加上鐵網圍起, 從外面看起來比較像廢棄屋, 雖然外面有Art Object Gallery的招牌, 我卻不得其門而入.

SJSU/King Library 對面 (和四街車庫同邊), 店內很小, 只有一邊的牆可掛畫.

地點尚可, 路邊停車方便, 咖啡店外觀不錯, 有戶外座位, 當天去的時候還在放假所以沒開店, 偷看了一下內裝, 好像還不錯, 需要再找時間回去詢問.

1383 Lincoln Ave, San Jose

地點不錯, 在Willow Glen市區, 內部空間尚可, 牆壁擺設空間也可接受, 可惜牆壁一面漆橘色, 一面漆綠色, 沒有頭照燈, 店家要抽10% commission, 卻是我目前唯一得到首肯的地方.

幾天內看了近二十個場地, 不是喜歡的不出租, 就是肯出租的我不喜歡, 這下頭大了.  我最壞的打算是在自家辦, 把客廳, 餐廳和中庭的傢具全部搬到車庫去, 租幾個Art Display Panels, 在家辦一個三天的Invitation Only的私人個展, 僅邀熟識的親朋好友來熱鬧熱鬧.

感謝你提供的幾個點子
你提的幾個地點場所我都有考慮過
但是我希望展出地點允許我賣展出的攝影作品(要付佣金)
因為辦展很花錢 (廣告傳單/印照片/錶框)
如果能賣些作品來貼補開銷是比較實際選擇

我有看上幾個Vacant retail space
但是他們是現在Vacant
不表示六月還會Vacant
他們不能給我答案
我也不能等
是比較可惜的

Happy New Year.

Alex and I have more than 10 years experience running big events and tradeshows. So we know a lot of places you can use for your show. Some of the places are even free to use and as long as you have liability insurance (the premiums are around $120 to $200 per year) that will cover business related events, like the monthly wine party you and Mark host.
Actually most of the people they forgot about government run buildings.
Below are some locations that you can check.

1. Milpitas, Saratoga and Cupertino Library. The build are new and contemporary.
2. Some of the city hall building and community centers.
3. Some of the private schools.
4. Vacant retail space.

Hey Jennie,

thanks for the info. I went to Barefoot Cafe today and talked to the girl who is in charge the display. I would put this place on my possible-list for second round consideration since I am doing the first round right now.
